Musculoskeletal Pathological Conditions – Lesson 233

We have gone through the musculoskeletal medical terms yet. In this lesson, we are going to deal about abnormal pathological conditions of musculoskeletal system.  There are several abnormal pathological disease conditions occur in the bones and muscle tissues due to the weakness and less growth and other reasons.  We will see all the conditions of disease one by one now.  These are the terms that are used everyday by the physicians in all the files while you involve in home or office live medical transcription files. If you are familiar with these words and their meanings, then the production would be of an easy task for you. So please go through these medical terms very carefully and understand them clearly. 1.  Bunion:  It is a swelling that usually found near the big toe at the metatarsophalangeal joint. 2.  Crepitus:  The crackling sound created in the joints when ends of any two bones rub against each other due to their rub on th...

MUSCULOSKELETAL – IMPORTANT SUFFIXES AND PREFIXES - Lesson 232

In the previous post, you have learned about some of the combining forms of musculoskeletal system, but in this post, we will learn about some important suffixes and prefixes of the musculoskeletal system. Definitely this post will be useful for the learners of the Medical Transcription freely here. The terms that are used in this post are generally used by the doctors in the dictations on a daily basis in the medical field and will be useful for the learners, so that you can easily know or grasp the idea of the forms of medical terms. Let us come to know about some of the prefixes II) PREFIXES 1. The prefix form ab- means away from and its terminology is abduction which means movement of an extremity or other body part. 2. The prefix form poly- means many or much and its terminology is polymyalgia which means the pain in many muscles or “poly” means many, “my” means muscle and “algia” means “pain”. 3. The prefix form dorsi- means back and its terminology is dorsi...

MUSCULOSKELETAL – IMPORTANT COMBINING FORMS - Lesson 231

In this post we would try to learn about the combining forms and their meaning. In this article, we will learn about some important Musculoskeletal combining forms. As a Medical Transcription learner, you all should know about these combining forms. While you are doing live files at any company or at home, physicians often dictate these words or terms in their files related to Musculoskeletal system. Generally the main usage of combining forms is to join two or more medical words into one word. 1.  The combining form my/o, its another terminology is electromyography which is a technique for calculating and recording the electrical activity by the production of skeletal muscles.  2.  The combining form fasci/o means fascia which means ‘forms sheaths enveloping muscles’ and its terminology is fasciectomy which explains surgical removal of fascia. 3.  The combining form iciomy/o means smooth and its terminology is leiomy...

MOVEMENT TYPES OF MUSCULAR SKELETAL SYSTEM - LESSON 230

Now let us learn about some of the muscular actions and their meanings. As a human being we live with movements using our muscles and bones of different kinds. Each muscle contracts and expands in combination with bone corresponding to the muscle attached to it, and so we can move easily in a smooth manner. These movements are as follows. They are flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, rotation, dorsiflexion, plantar flexion, supination, and pronation. As a medical transcription aspirant, we should know about these movement types and should have a good understanding about them. We will see the explanation of each movement type one by one now. 1. For ‘flexion’ the term means lessening or decreasing the angle between two bones or bending a limb. 2. For ‘extension’ the term means increasing or to make much the angle between two bones or straightening out a limb. 3. For ‘abduction’ the term means the movement or acting away from the midline of the body. 4. For ‘adducti...

Games Prolong the Lifetime of Alzheimer’s Disease Patients

What is Alzheimer’s disease? Alzheimer’s disease is called AD in short.  The other names of this disease will make us understand the actuality of this disease more.  SDAT is the another name of AD and it is expanded as senile dementia of the Alzheimer type or PDDAT and it is expanded as primary degenerative dementia of the Alzheimer's type.  Generally, all over the world this disease is termed as Alzheimer’s in short.  This is mainly a general type of dementia.  The name was given to this disease by a neurophysiologist name Alois Alzheimer, a German, who did describe about this disease condition for the first time to the world.  Alzheimer’s is a terminal illness as it is incurable and also degenerative.  The common symptoms of this disease are the lack of ability to create new memories, such as complexity in brining to mind newly scrutinized events or facts. Most probably a brain scan will reveal the existence of this disease accompanie...

Three types of muscles - Lesson 229

In this post we will learn about the Muscles and its types. There are three types of muscles in the body which are briefly explained below. They are 1. Smooth muscles:- These muscles are also called involuntary or visceral muscles, are those muscle fibers that move internal organs such as the digestive tract, blood vessels, and secretory ducts leading from glands. These muscles are controlled by the autonomic nervous system. They are so called smooth because they have no dark and light fibrils in their cytoplasm. Skeletal muscle fibers are arranged in bundles, while smooth muscle forms sheets of fibers as it wraps around tubes and vessels. 2. Striated muscles:- These muscles are also called voluntary or skeletal muscles which are the muscle fibers that move all bones as well as the face and eyes. We have deep or conscious control over the muscles through the central and peripheral nervous system. The fibers also called cells known Striated muscle fibers have a pattern or way ...

JOINT DISEASE CONDITIONS - LESSON 228

In this post we will learn about the remaining Pathological conditions in the Musculoskeletal system.  Herniation of an intervertebral disc: Abnormal protrusion of a cartilaginous intervertebral  pad into the neuralcanal or spinal nerves. This situation or condition is generally called as “slipped disk” (disc) that presses on the spinal nerves or the cord. Low-back pain, cervical pain, and ‘sciatica’ or radiating pain down to the leg are the symptoms, which depend on the location of the disk. Bed rest, Physical therapy, and drugs for pain  will help in initial treatment. In patients with chronic or recurrent disk herniation, ‘laminectomy,’ which means surgical removal of a portion of the vertebral arch to allow more room for the protruded disk also maybe advised. Spinal fusion of the two vertebrae with removal of the damaged and herniated disk may be necessary as well. Aspiration percutaneous diskectomy is a new technique for removing the disk by inserting a tube throug...
